Fall 2011 semester just started!

019/30 mins

Finally come back for speedpaint. I've been going outside sketches instead of stay home and paint in front of my computer...

I saturated sand and ocean's color on purpose. The wave is pretty tricky to paint. I feel I should have simplifed shapes better.

Test7/ 3hrs.

I took one of my doodle I posted on my main blog and play around with color. Dont know if it works tho...hahaha
Once I got the pose and proportion, everything went pretty quick. The drawing and painting was pretty roung tho, so I count it as a speedpainting piece.
No reference/ From imagination.

Test 6

Creepy red riding hood! More study of night scene and without reference. The values on the girl and the fire are off. I know it should be darker on the shadow side. The background has light from the moon is probably to bright. I think it suppose to be darker as well. I stopped after 45 mins.

Test5

Revisit my old visdev project. A quick value study of Green Knight temple scene. Just like the previous post, a quick sketch about 45 mins of a fantasy japanese temple.

Test4

I've been distracted to do something else so I haven't posted any new speed paint for the past 2-3 weeks. However, I did some quick doodles and ideation sketches which I was hesitated to post them here. But this blog is meant for speed painting and my studies anyway...so here you go!
This took me about 50 to an hour. Just a scene from my imagination. Suppose to take place in fantasy japan world...evil temple, asian Lord of the ring..overcast day kinda thing... It looks really quick and fuzzy. I'll try to finish this piece later when I have time...hopefully!

Test 3

Without references, took me about 2.5 hours. I had no idea what I was doing when I first started off. I just knew I wanted to paint on black canvas and paint light. Then I ended up with this one! I force myself to draw only simple big shapes. I think I'm somewhat successful for that. Only those three trees in the background that I dont like, their shapes are kinda repeated. I've never really paint a night scene before. The way I set up the light, I just make it really simple. Only one main light source on the right. Then I wanted to make it a little scary and I recognize a lot of scary movies espcially monster or werewolf movies like to set up second light source in the background to create depth and atmosphere. So I try to do the same. Overall I'm satisfy with the result. Good practice!

018/30 min

Study from life from my apartment room. Looks pretty simple but I actually learn a lot from this one little painting. Painting in the dark is really help to train my eyes to seperate lights and values. Your eyes just see light better in the dark! Pretty tricky at first when I try to figure out where is the lightest and darkest since the light boucing around and the material and its surface made different values. And i put the painting on black background just to make the painting looked more close to what I saw while I was painting.

Test 2

Without reference. Took me awhile to figure out composition. Actually the most challenge in this painting are buildings in the background.... The lighting is really similar to my previous one. I need to come up with different composition next time.

016/ 2.5 hrs.

Okay! this one probably not a speed painting. I need to practice portrait paiting, so I picked this (one of the most) beautiful painting. I hope you know the artist who did this!

The ref. I used actually from an art book I have. The picture I show here is from internet. That's why the color is different. And the perspective is totally off! lol Well, another fun practice!

015/ 45 min

From photo ref. , 30 min block in and another 15 min to make all edges clear. I actually push the color of the rock a little more saturate. And I tried to do this painting as if Im doint traditional painting by using natural brush. I feel I could push the BG back a little more....Well this is really fun! Time to go to bed...

014/ 1 hour

Took me a bit longer than another painting I did to define edges. I should have be more careful about the perspective. I'm not satisfy with the result. However, I learn a lot from this one. I'll try a more challenge reference next time...or may be it's time for another original paint from my head?

013/ 30 min

Pretty fun painting this one! Dave Yee has recommended, my friend Jose and us while we took his storyboard class, to paint in cinema ratio. Feng Zhu mentioned the same thing in his vdo turorials... I kinda like this painting I think it bec. of limited color palette. Goro always talks about color temperature when he gave crits to other friends of mine, so I keep that in mind while I was painting this one. The ocean's color is little tricky cus there some green in it. Another good excercise tho.

Test1

I just got some advise from Goro Fujita to make an original painting out of my head without using any photo references. He actually recommend me to take one of my color script shot I did earlier and repaint them. But I feel want to do something new...so here it is... It took me forever and I dont like it at all.... It looks just like my another visdev stuffs I did earlier during the past semester. I tried to paint a scene with very simple lightling. It's a hot summer time day! Well...I just dont like the color of this one...I dunno... I'll try something different later. Get back to daily speed painting.

012/30 min

Overcast light and many small shapes... I focus on matching values, since my other paintings were always warmer than the reference. I think this one turns out ok.

005/ 30 min

Ai...Ya!!! This is way too hard for me! LOL The color of the tree and leafs are tricky.  I tried to simplify a lot but still really really hard to get those smaller shapes.  And also I always have a hard time to get the ground, street's color right.   Oh well...just have to move forward!

004/ 40min

I saturated the tree color on purpose.  Looks like it fail..LOL
